ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection)

In the case of severe male factor infertility and/or in cases in which poor fertilization was achieved in a previous IVF cycle, a single sperm may be microscopically injected directly into each mature egg. This specialized insemination technique represents a major advance in reproductive medicine for couples where fertilization probably would not occur due to the presence of very low sperm number or a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm. It may also benefit those couples where the female has abnormal egg morphology and/or a history of poor fertilization in a previous IVF cycle.
